Overview
Derek Pontin is a partner and the Calgary department leader for the Restructuring, Insolvency and Bankruptcy group at Dentons Canada. He has extensive experience in corporate insolvency and reorganization, and in all manner of restructuring and bankruptcy proceedings. His work has covered local, national and international companies and business groups, engaged in domestic and cross-border restructurings, receiverships and enforcement scenarios. His practice also includes oil and gas royalty and trust litigation, among other commercial finance and litigation matters.
Derek has acted for secured and unsecured creditors, companies and corporate groups in restructuring proceedings, receivers, trustees and other court officers, directors and officers, and other parties impacted by insolvency processes. His clients include banks, financial/credit institutions, solvent and insolvent corporations and partnerships, accounting and other professional firms, not-for-profit societies, and individuals. He regularly appears before the Courts in Alberta, including the Alberta Court of King's Bench, Court of Appeal, Provincial Court and the Federal Court (Trial Division).
Derek joined Dentons Canada LLP as a summer student in 2006 and commenced his articles with the Firm in 2007. He has been an active mentor to students and junior lawyers for more than a decade, within Dentons and through organizations such as the Canadian Bar Association and Alberta Law Society. Outside the office, Derek volunteers with the Calgary Stampede as a member of the Stampede Parade Committee (Media and Communications), and formerly with Stampede Lotteries, Stampede Foundation, Scouts Canada, and other associations.
Derek is a former member of the executive for the Canadian Bar Association - Insolvency Subsection (South Alberta) and the Turnaround Management Association, Northwest Chapter (each full term).
