Overview

Derek A. Kurrant is counsel in DLA Piper Canada's Calgary office and a member of the firm's Tax Group. A lawyer and chartered accountant, he has practised exclusively in taxation for more than 25 years. Derek advises public companies and private enterprises on corporate reorganizations, mergers and acquisitions, public debt and equity offerings, purchases and sales of businesses, and structures involving partnerships, joint ventures and trusts. His practice also includes international and cross-border planning for Canadian businesses expanding abroad and multinational enterprises establishing, acquiring or disposing of Canadian operations. He has significant experience with tax structuring and transactional advice for energy projects, including oil and gas and renewable energy matters. DLA Piper lists additional areas of focus including corporate law, tax-related litigation, mining and mineral resources, and family business and wealth management. Derek was admitted to the Alberta Bar in 1993.
