Overview
Matthew is an experienced litigator, recognized for his work in consumer protection class actions and complex commercial disputes. He regularly represents leading airlines, telecommunications providers, banks, retailers, technology companies and commercial vehicle manufacturers in major consumer-rights and product-liability litigation. Matthew has appeared before various courts of first instance, the Québec Court of Appeal and the Federal Court of Canada, and has represented clients in the context of investigations by consumer protection, banking and insurance regulators.
Matthew has extensive experience dealing with the Québec Consumer Protection Act, and has deep knowledge of the federal and provincial consumer and regulatory issues which are central to doing business in Québec. He regularly provides advice to Canadian and multinational corporations on the best ways to harmonize their consumer-facing practices across Canada, while complying with Quebec’s unique civil law regime, including the implications of recent legislative reforms such as Quebec Bill 29 An Act to protect consumers from planned obsolescence and to promote the durability, repairability and maintenance of goods and Bill 79, An Act to protect consumers against abusive commercial practices and to offer better transparency with respect to prices and credit. Matthew also regularly provides advice relating to language and other legal requirements for doing business in Québec.
