Overview

Caireen E. Hanert is a Partner in Gowling WLG's Calgary office. Her practice focuses on restructuring and insolvency litigation and commercial litigation. In insolvency matters, she advises debtors, creditors, interim lenders, critical suppliers, and court-appointed officers in proceedings under the Companies' Creditors Arrangement Act and the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act. Her commercial litigation practice covers complex corporate and commercial matters involving energy and construction, securities, shareholder disputes, oppression actions, derivative claims, commercial fraud, and breach of contract. Her experience includes energy industry disputes involving CAPL contracts, gas supply contracts, oil and gas facilities and processing contracts, operator disputes, royalty disputes, accounting disputes, and fiduciary duties. She represents financial institutions, resource companies, oil and gas service companies and trusts, First Nations, land holding corporations and developers, and international retailers. She has appeared at all levels of court in Alberta and the Northwest Territories, as well as before the Supreme Court of Canada, the British Columbia Supreme Court, the Saskatchewan Court of King's Bench, the Federal Court of Canada, and the Federal Court of Appeal. Before joining Gowling WLG, she practised at another national law firm, and she serves as Chair of the Western Canada chapter of the International Women's Insolvency and Restructuring Confederation.
